Over the past couple of days we have been busy. We finally listed our place and have had multiple showings (How to Prep for a Showing post coming soon ;)). Here are some key take away on how we remodeled our kitchen for less than 5K and under 2 weeks:
- Replace / Upgrade Appliances
- Upgrade your Sink – Trust Us
- Learn to put up backsplash and grout
- Keep hardware – if you can
- Keep cabinetry and paint doors
The biggest expense was of course the appliances. We replaced both the refrigerator and microwave (which both were open box at Best Buy – wahoo!) first and ended up replacing the oven and the dishwasher during the renovation.
Second biggest expense was the granite. We did beveled granite (and i must admit, I am NOT a big fan of granite but it is what sells!) on both countertops – reminder: we have a galley kitchen. We also extended the bar top and did waterfall from the bar top to the counter top.
The last big change we made was opening up the top row of cabinets. A big reason we purchased our place is the amount of cabinet space. The top row of cabinets were actually doors that had been nailed to makeshift wood inserts nailed to the ceiling and top of the bottom row of cabinets. We decided to build the open cabinet box and keep exposed for decoration.
While we chose to stick with neutral colors, we hoped to make the space feel bigger and eliminate any previous builder mistakes.
